TV Industry Blog 3, Question 2 (Feb. 15)

Which two streaming services offer, or are developing, the best original TV series content? Which streaming services would benefit from creating more original content? Finally, do you think the streamers will eventually replace linear TV or continue to be a complementary/supplemental service for the majority of Americans?  Limit: 15 responses

Personally, I think that Netflix is the streaming service offering and developing the best original TV series content. Just last year Netflix debuted Squid Games, which is their most watched series in Netflix history (Schneider). Netflix has consistently put out original series that people enjoy. They have an advantage because they have been offering original content for years now so they have returning viewers for each new season they put out. Additionally, subscribers are more likely to hit play on a Netflix original because they have built such a strong reputation for their original series. As for who is second, I am not entirely sure. Disney+ seems like a strong contender, but only if you are looking at their Marvel or Star Wars related content. Shows like The Mandalorian and WandaVision were huge hits, and the service has already announced multiple upcoming television projects in the Marvel and Star Wars realms, yet shows like Turner & Hooch and The Mysterious Benedict Society were canceled after one season (“From”). To be honest, I feel like those shows were barely advertised. Disney knows what is going to be popular, and they do not need to advertise for shows like Hawkeye as much because they already have that built in fan-base, but that means other shows are falling victim.

I think I would have to say either HBO Max or Apple TV+ are both contenders for that second spot. HBO Max has put out shows like Hacks or The Sex Lives of College Girls, while Apple has released the hit show Ted Lasso. However, I think that both of these platforms would benefit by creating more original content. With HBO, it is slightly unclear where the divide is between HBO series and HBO Max originals. If the platform were to clearly create more originals, I think that would increase subscribers. As for Apple, they are putting out original content, but it is not matching the quality of Ted Lasso or reaching the same amount of audiences. The second season of The Morning Show did not get the same acknowledgment as season one. I remember when the platform launched, The Morning Show was one of their first shows on there. Now, I hardly even heard about it. I think they are focusing on the success of Ted Lasso, but they need to take that and channel it into other shows. Lastly, I will say Peacock is the platform that could benefit the most from creating original content. I know they are creating it, but not enough of it, and they are not advertising it properly because the only show I have heard of is Girls5Eva.

Whether streaming will replace cable, I’m not sure. I think that streaming is definitely the way of the future and cable is less popular, but I do not think cable will disappear entirely. Although people have switched to streaming, streaming prices are going up. In December of 2020, Hulu’s live TV plan increased to $65 a month, up $10 from the year before, and up from $45 the year before that (Willcox). Not to mention, to go ad free with that plan, it’s an additional $6. So, if someone decides to switch from cable to streaming, get the live plan, then have other streaming services in addition to Hulu, they could end up paying a similar amount to what they were paying with cable. Cable is still going to be around because some people will still choose to use it over streaming.

  2. I believe that Netflix produces the top original content. Netflix has been around for numerous years and have been a top contender in the streaming wars. Netflix has created critically acclaimed shows such as Squid Game, Orange is the New Black, House of Cards, Tiger King and more. Netflix originals have been nominated for many awards as well. The company has spent millions of dollars on creating their own content. According to the Yahoo Entertainment Staff, “The South Korea-produced Squid Game shattered records when it logged 1.65 billion hours of viewing during a 28 day period…” (Yahoo). Squid Game was one of the most successful Netflix originals. I think Netflix is the most successful at producing their own content, because they offer a wide range of originals. Their originals range from mystery, drama, science fiction, romance and more. They also bring in many famous actors to star in their originals such as Winona Ryder, Michael Douglas and Drew Barrymore. Many people continue to watch Netflix originals, because of their high success rate and popularity on social media. Netflix continues to dominate the streaming industry with their original content.

Another top contender for their original content is HBO Max. HBO is another platform that has been around for a while. The company recently decided to use their popularity and power to create a streaming platform filled with their original content. HBO’s original shows has received positive acclaim as well. Some of their most notable originals include Curb Your Enthusiasm, Euphoria, Succession, And Just Like That and The Flight Attendant. According to Lucas Shaw from Bloomberg, “To date, HBO Max has come the closest to matching Netflix’s pace” (Shaw). Their shows have also been up for awards as well. HBO Max also received a ton of press for the Friends reunion. Since launching their streaming platform, HBO Max has created even more originals, ranging from various genres.

I think Apple TV+ and Peacock need to create more original content to make them a top contender in the streaming wars. Apple TV+ has a few notable shows such as Ted Lasso and The Morning Show. But in order to enhance their status, these platforms need to distinguish themselves with more original content.

Personally, I think streamers will replace linear TV. Personally, my family has decided to cut the cord with cable television. My family has decided to switch to Hulu live to stream television. We are able to stream television and watch Hulu content in our subscription. According to an article from Forbes, “Since 2014, the number of people who has cut the cord on their cable, satellite or telco subscription has more than tripled going from 15.6 million to a projected 50.4 million this year” (Fitzgerald). Consumers are willing to spend money on multiple streaming platforms, rather than watching live television. My prediction is that major streaming services will look to collaborate or merge with major television providers. Cable television usership is down, and cable companies will look to generate revenue from other streaming platforms. Most people I know have switched to having Hulu Live or YouTube TV and have cut the cord with cable. My older family members continue to have cable television. I think over the next few years, streaming services will dominate and take over cable television.

Despite the countless number of streaming services that are developing original content, there are a few that stand out amongst the crowd. Arguably at the top of the list, Netflix has been a powerhouse in originals since it began creating its own content. Not only does Netflix have incredibly strong scripted series and films, their unscripted content has also been incredibly popular. According to an article on Bloomberg, Netflix has been the largest buyer of unscripted content in the world (Shaw). As a result of their buying practices, they’ve been able to require and release titles like “Tiger King” and “Too Hot to Handle” as their own content. Netflix is also one of the fastest-growing platforms regarding their original content. According to an article on Collider, since 2020 their percentage of original content has nearly doubled from 25% to 40% (Boccella). And of course, no one can deny the success of their original content, as many of their series’ collect several academy awards every year (The crown being their most recent success).
Along with Netflix, when it comes down to the best original content on a streaming service, a dark horse in the game would be Amazon Prime. While they may not be the first to come to mind when thinking about streaming platforms, they have been very consistent in the quality of their shows. Some of their original shows include “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”, “Transparent”, and “Fleabag”, all of which have picked up at least one Emmy award for Amazon Prime. While Amazon Prime has received less nominations for their original content overall compared to some of its competitors, it has the most diverse pool of content included in the nominations, which I personally believe gives it an advantage. Not only does their current content do well, some upcoming projects are projected to help boost the platform even higher. According to an article on Indiewire, Amazon Prime is expected to spend approximately $450 million on a “Lord of the Rings” spin-off series. (Ferguson)
The streaming service I think would benefit most from creating original content is Peacock. Considering they’re owned by NBC they have the resources to build their content library. According to an article on The Hollywood Reporter, Susan Rovner has stepped into a role where she is essentially in charge of content on Peacock, and she has made it clear that she is excited about her new role and ready to begin several projects in the hope of expanding the platforms’ original content. Considering they have the plans laid out and set in place, if they approach it in the right way, that could mean large growth for the platform itself, leading to more success (O’Connell)

    1. I don’t think that cable will completely disappear, however I do think that the role cable currently plays in society will shift to a much smaller aspect of people’s television experience. I think that at the end of the day, cable will remain for news, certain live sports, and much smaller programming whereas streaming will become a place for scripted and narrative series’.

In terms of the two streaming services with the best original TV series content, I think Netflix and Disney+ take the lead. I know Netflix is the streaming service we always talk about, but it’s for good reason. Just in this past year there has been a lot of hits from Netflix including “Squid Game,” “Money Heist,” “Bridgerton,” and “Lucifer.” “Squid Game” alone “produced an impressive 16.4 billion viewing minutes among US audiences” (Spangler). And they already greenlit a season two. On top of that, Netflix has also succeeded in original unscripted series, including “Tiger King,” “Too Hot to Handle,” “Queer Eye,” and “Nailed It!” According to the article, “After Bingeing on Dramas, Netflix and Rivals Target Reality TV,” “Netflix’s original series account for more than half of the reality shows viewers want to watch online.” Even with expensive failures like “Ultimate Beastmaster” and “Jupiter’s Legacy,” there are so many original series that skyrocket in ratings and streams that Netflix can continue to flourish.

The other streaming service that is making successful original series is Disney+. In the course of a year, Disney+ came out with five original Marvel series including “WandaVision,” “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” “Loki,” “What If?” and “Hawkeye.” In addition to that, Disney+ continues with more original series in the Star Wars universe, including “The Mandalorian” and “Book of Boba Fett.” These series have “allowed Disney+ to add subscribers at a very fast rate” (Silver). I do, however, think that Disney needs to be careful with their original series and make sure to expand their content outside of these two universes. While extremely popular, there needs to be more original content coming from this streamer in order to avoid lack of variety.

I do want to point out HBO Max. They have had a lot of original hits recently, like “Succession,” “Sex Lives of College Girls,” “Euphoria,” and “Hacks.” I almost wanted to consider HBO Max as one of the two streaming services with the best original content, but I didn’t because I feel like there isn’t enough content yet to be considered one of the tops. However, I do think HBO would greatly benefit from continuing their original series since they seem to be really good at it. HBO Max “has come the closest to matching Netflix’s pace” (Shaw) to date. They have ordered lots of TV series, documentary series, and competition shows, becoming a real competitor.

Finally, this begs the question will streaming services eventually replace liner TV? I think there is a real chance of this happening, especially with the large amount of people continuing to cut the cord. I think with SVOD services like Roku TV and YouTube TV, people will continue to step away from cable and strictly use streaming services. When that will happen, I’m not sure, especially with sports networks continuing to save broadcast television. But I do think one day streamers will eventually replace linear TV.

While the streaming battles are neck and neck as to who’s on top for content. There’s no question about who’s on top for best original TV series content. While Netflix, personally ranks on top for content in general, an article even went as far to say “Netflix was really easy to pitch the last few years because almost anything you could take to cable you could take to Netflix” (Shaw). Netflix ranks ahead of its competitors due to also stepping up the game for offering and developing original content- especially during the pandemic. Netflix’s Squid Game, and Bridgerton “firmly established [Netflix] as the first name in streaming for global households” (Staff). Squid Game blew up records for viewing hours even set up by Bridgerton. Netflix has success globally which is what sets it apart from other streaming services. Frm South Korea with Squid Game to the U.K with Bridgerton and even to Spain for Money Heist. Netflix could conquer the world in ratings alone. It would be remiss to leave out Netflix’s original successes like Stranger Things and Orange is the New Black which truly set the stage for original TV series streaming content. During the pandemic, Netflix had particular success by taking a shot on Joe Exotic’s story with Tiger King, which a lot of people remember as a cornerstone of the pandemic alongside whipped coffee/TikTok trends. Another winner for streaming is Disney+. Disney+ blew Marvel fans away with Wandavision as well as the other Marvel TV series adaptations. “The eye-popping box office grosses…proves that the Marvel magic remains mighty on the big screen…2021 demonstrated that the [MCU] fits comfortably on the small screen as well” (Staff). Netflix doesn’t appear to be slowing down either, with 2022 shows in the works that many Marvel fans are already excitedly anticipating like Moon Knight and She-Hulk (Staff). Netflix also did well with all of their Star Wars TV Series, specifically The Mandalorian, given all the merchandising success following the rise of “Grogu”, the baby Yoda character featured on the show, fans are always waiting for more content of “The Child”.

The streaming platform that I think would benefit from creating more original content, as well as just better content in general is Apple TV+. Apple TV+ is just too expensive to be in the same category as the big streaming dogs. Apple TV+’s content does not reflect its price either. Despite having Ted Lasso, which basically swept the Emmys, one show does not mean the platform is worth the price. It’s not surprising two years into its conception Apple TV+ is at “less than 20 million subscribers” (Staff), and little to no one knows about the star-studded The Morning Show. “Compared to other big hitters in the streaming world, Apple TV Plus won’t offer access to new blockbuster films or fan-favorite classics” (Callaham). Compared to Netflix and Disney+, who’s originals are killing the game and the competition. “...both services cost more than Apple TV Plus, their catalogs are significantly larger and constantly growing” (Callaham). I think streamers have the ability to take over linear TV, but only because most streamers are taking up live sports options. The main reason a lot of audience members keep live TV is for that live viewing experience with no spoilers of watching it the next day on-demand or even the next week on a streaming platform- live options on streaming platforms are the key to getting rid of linear TV.

  6. Streaming services are taking over and so is their original content. I believe that Netflix dominates all other streaming service when it comes to original content. Netflix continues to produce content that is talked about constantly. Netflix is willing to take risks with their content; and offer a variety of content, “One of the main benefits of their original content is its diversity; in covering so many different styles of shows and films, they are succeeding in popularizing forgotten and unpopular genres”(Lytollis). This can be seen by Squid Game. Netflix took the risk of streaming a dubbed version of a show which attracted billions. Netflix’s risk on the dubbed series paid off the show “produced an impressive 16.4 billion viewing minutes among U.S. audiences over its nine-episode run”(Spangler). Even though the show was filmed in Korean Netflix offered subtitles in 37 languages and dubs in 34 languages according to an article by NBC News. The chart in the article Surprise! Criminal Minds’ Was 2021’s Most -Streamed TV Show in the U.S. speaks for itself. Netflix is dominating original content 12 out of the 15 top shows are Netflix Originals. I believe that Netflix will continue to be successful when it comes to their original content.
Another service that will benefit from making more original content is HBO Max. The platform is recently gaining attention from the ever-popular show Euphoria. HBO also has a nostalgia factor with older popular shows that they are brining back and creating reunions for. “HBO Max also boasted the biggest comedy event of the year in the form of the long-awaited Friends reunion, which inspired tears of laughter and nostalgic longing” (Yahoo). HBO also has a good mix of content on their platform much like Netflix. They also have content created for various age groups which is where I think platforms like Disney+ falls short. I think HBO will continue to rise due to it’s close competition with Netflix’s content: “to date, HBO Max has come the closest to matching Netflix’s pace. The streaming service from AT&T Inc.’s Warner Media has ordered a little of everything, including a cooking show with Selena Gomez, various documentary series like “100 Foot Wave” and multiple competition shows, ranging from ballroom dancing to flower arranging”(Shaw). This further shows how diverse HBO’s content is with lots of selections in various categories.
I do think streamers will take over linear TV. Many of my friends and family have cut the cord on cable. Many are switching due to the cost as well as preferring the content on streaming platforms. The uninterrupted viewing is also a perk that comes with streaming. Which leaves no surprise that cable subscriptions are dropping: “Cable cord cutting statistics in 2021 show that cable and satellite subscriptions are plummeting. Major cable providers like AT&T are losing customers at an alarming rate, as streaming services like Hulu and Disney Plus seem to be taking over”(Nick G). I don’t think it will be much longer until streaming takes over. Which will either cause cable companies to lower their prices or disappear.

In recent years there has been a boom in streaming services that started from Netflix back in the early 2010s. Eventually, many competing companies caught on to what they were doing and decided to step their feet into the streaming service wars. However, I still firmly believe that Netflix has the best original TV series content. Alongside Netflix would have to be Disney + because the company is well aware of how to attract its audience. Netflix still dominates in this category as last year they had 3 of their shows in the top 10 most viewed: "Tiger King", "The Last Dance", and "Too Hot To Handle"(Shaw). This demonstrates that Netflix still has the advantage of knowing the type of content that its viewers will like.

Meanwhile, Disney + was released in 2020 and has amassed over 118 million subscribers (Rayome). This shows that Disney + may not be as well-known as Netflix but they are making strides to increase their brand. The big thing Disney + has going for it is they have all original Disney content from Disney Channel Original TV shows that we grew up to such as "Good Luck Charlie" and "The Suite Life of Zack and Cody". These shows and content can attract teens who want to relive their childhood. Not only do they attract Disney fans, but they also attract Star Wars and Marvel fans by producing content that can only be viewed on their streaming platform. A perfect example is when they started releasing "The Mandalorian" and "Wanda Vision" which have drawn in millions of subscribers (Rayome).

I believe that the streaming service that will benefit from creating more original content is NBC Universal's Peacock. Peacock was formed around the same time Disney + was created but has not found the same success as Disney. The main reason for this because the content they provide does not fully interest the subscribers that are streaming. The main reason for this is because in their free version they only show a certain number of episodes to tease you into purchasing premium. Also, their original content does not interest the targeted audience that they should be going after. For instance, Peacock recently came out with a new show called "Dan Brown's The Lost Symbol" which is based on Dan Brown's "Da Vinci Code" novel series. Many teens, who are supposed to be the targeted audience, don't care about a show like this because they do not want to watch history.

Finally, I believe that there will be a change coming in the media industry in the next couple of years as streaming services will be taking over. The main reason for this is many Americans throughout the country have already begun the process of cutting the cord. Cutting the cord means they have switched from cable to strictly streaming services. In a recent survey conducted back in 2021, 30% of the people being surveyed stated that they are planning on cutting the cord by the end of the year(Nick G.). This is only the beginning of what is to be expected in the upcoming years because the people who still have cable are traditional households who grew up with cable, once the population dies out, it will be all streaming services and cable will be a part of the past.

As the country continues to enter a new era of streaming, there are some that stand out among the rest of the competitors for original content. The top streaming service is definitely Netflix. It has dominated the global landscape for many years and has become known for its original content that has been a massive part of its brand. Squid Games was one of the most talked about series of 2021 and Netflix gained a lot of acclaim for it, along with astounding viewership. Yahoo reports that, “The South Korea-produced Squid Game shattered records when it logged 1.65 billion hours of viewing during a 28-day period, more than double the 625 million hours that the made-inthe-U.K. Bridgerton racked up at the beginning of 2021” (Yahoo!). These stats are proving that Netflix is the leader in original content for its household name along with the massive amount of success that their shows have garnered.

Disney+ would be the second in line for the best original content among streaming services. Since the iconic company has stock in so many different franchises, including Marvel, Pixar and Lucasfilm just to name a few, they have the ability to create and upload so much unique and original content to the platform. In 2021, shows like WandaVision, The Mandalorian and Loki helped to build up the subscriber base for Disney+. Ty Pendlebury and Alison Rayome of CNET assure that, “Disney Plus is fun, easy to use and relatively affordable. Marvel and Star Wars continue to be a huge success and this will help Disney to keep pushing out new, original content for its users” (Pendlebury, Rayome). With programming made for all ages and so many owned brands, this makes Disney+ another huge contender for their opportunities with original content.

A streaming service that could benefit from more original content would be NBCUniversal’s Peacock. At a time where they have the streaming rights to all things Olympics and the Super Bowl, this is a prime opportunity to get subscribers and hook them in. Peacock has already made attempts at original content, including Girls5Eva, Rutherford Falls and recently Wolf Like Me, but they are not well known for it, which is concerning. Peacock does have more on the horizon as they are releasing new content in February, including Bel-Air, a reboot of the 90s classic Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Also, on tap is the new Jennifer Lopez-Owen Wilson movie Marry Me and a scripted Tiger King spin-off series called Joe vs. Carole in early March. Peacock needs to continue pushing out original content, while marketing to their target audience effectively in order to gain more subscribers.

  10. It is difficult to determine if streaming will ever fully replace cable television. I personally don’t believe that streaming will ever be able to topple cable completely for one reason, live sporting events. Michael Schneider and Monica Marie Zorrilla of Variety argue that, “It’s sports. The NFL, beginning with the Super Bowl at No. 1, holds 39 of the 100 slots for top telecasts of the year, making football once again the most popular show on TV” (Schneider, Zorrilla). The Super Bowl is always the No. 1 program every year and it’s not close. The NFL as a whole dominates the ratings each season and the fact that almost 40% of the Top 100 list consists of live sporting events proves that this is what can keep cable television alive.

    Question 2 - Part 1
From my perspective, I believe that Netflix and Hulu are the two streaming services that offer and develop the best original TV series content. Netflix and hulu have provided a variety of channels and an affordable price for content that you receive. Even as new streaming platforms like Apple TV+ and Disney+ started to gain momentum, Netflix was still able to maintain its place as the most-watched platform in 2021. “2021 was a very good year to be Netflix”. (Yahoo). Netflix’s shift toward original content was not a random idea. It was made with the belief that it could produce more diverse and original series that were previously only available on traditional TV networks. Serenity Gibbons in Forbes Article states, “Netflix’s monetary bet on original content development has begun to pay off. And despite the fact that the platform’s own content accounts for a mere 8 percent of its available viewing options, Netflix’s own shows and movies dominate the most-watched list.” (Forbes).

Netflix is the most wealthy and flourished platform when it comes to creating original content. Their variety of titles include drama, sci-fi, and mystery. One of the most popular original series on Netflix is Squid Game. This game is filmed in Korean and can be accessed in 37 different languages. “ The South Korea-produced Squid Game shattered records when it logged 1.65 billion hours of viewing during a 28-day period, more than double the 625 million hours that the made-in-the-U.K. Bridgerton racked up at the beginning of 2021.” (Yahoo). Even though Hulu has its own original content, it could use more of it. It could also benefit from having more movies and documentaries as well. Not only could it get more original content, but it would also change the way people watch video. “If you don’t opt for the “no ads” add-on, where you end up paying an extra $6/month (at the time of this writing), you are going to be shown clips of ads before and after each video.” (Tech 21 Century). Unfortunately, Hulu has missing seasons for some of its older TV shows. I know that because I have started 2 shows on Hulu and both had a missing season, so it was inconsistent.

    Question 2 - Part 2
Although, Hulu has its pros and cons, if you're looking for a way to keep yourself updated with all your favorite shows, Hulu is still a great option. It also offers live local channels such as ABC, CBS, and NBC. I have many favorite shows to watch on Hulu, especially classic TV shows that I can’t watch on different television platforms. “Earlier this year, Walt Disney Co. announced that longtime TV exec Rob Mills would start overseeing a new unscripted programming unit that makes shows for Hulu and ABC.” (Bloomberg). I think streamers will replace Linear TV and continue to be a complimentary supplemental service for most Americans because the decline in linear TV ratings is starting to catch the attention of advertisers. Despite the decline in linear TV ratings, marketers will still be able to use strategies that pair their linear TV with connected TV.

Another streaming service that would benefit from creating original content is Paramount Plus. Paramount Plus has made multiple original TV series, but there has been no breakout program from the streaming service. Paramount Plus has seen moderate success with their series The Good Fight, along with their Star Teck original series, but not enough to come close to competing with Netflix or even Hulu (Persaud, 2021). Paramount Plus would highly benefit from successful original TV series.
I believe that in the future streaming services will completely replace linear TV. It is already on the path to doing so with Hulu having a live TV option as part of one of its packages. Also, linear TV stations are making streaming services, like NBC with Peacock, which means the likelihood of streaming platforms dominating over linear TV has become even higher. Many people are already opting to cancel their cable subscriptions because they no longer watch linear TV. I do not think that this replacement is happening soon since older generations tend to stick with what they know and continue to watch linear TV. However, once millennials and generation Z get older, the replacement of linear TV with streaming services is going to be inevitable.

  14. During the pandemic, streaming platforms were a huge hit all around. In my opinion, Netflix and HBO Max are developing the best original TV series content. Netflix is consistently coming out with new content, and their “New & Popular” feature allows the audience to anticipate what’ll be available in the coming weeks. “In a year bookended by Bridgerton and Squid Game, Netflix firmly established itself as the first name in streaming for global households” (Yahoo). The reason why Netflix is the most popular with their original content is because they have been around the longest. Because of this, Netflix has been developing longer, coming up with more features and ideas that some other streaming services doesn’t have. “Netflix had all or part of 14 of the 15 most-viewed acquired TV shows of the year on Nielsen’s streaming chart, including ‘NCIS’ (No.3), ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ (No.4), ‘Heartland’ (No.5), ‘Manifest’ (No.6) and ‘Supernatural’ (No.7). Each of those titles registered higher totally watch-time than any streaming platforms’ original series, primarily because there are many more episodes available” (Spangler).
HBO Max would definitely be a close second streaming service with best original content in my opinion. I’ve had a subscription to HBO Max for as long as I can remember. Some originals that stood out to me would be Search Party and The Sex Live’s of College Girls. So many people are starting to watch HBO Max also for its HBO original content such as Euphoria and Game of Thrones. What makes it so special is its wide variety of premium content. “HBO Max is a well-designed app full of popular TV shows and movies. It has HBO’s entire catalog, DC Universe titles, along with favorites such as Friends, Rick and Morty, Sesame Street, the Lord of the Rings movies and almost every Studio Ghibli film” (Rayome). I can see HBO Max growing even more in the future to be almost as popular as Netflix with its original content.
The streaming services that I think would benefit from creating more original content would be Peacock and Apple TV+. Both of these streaming services have original content, but barely any. Peacock includes fan favorites The Office and Parks and Recreation, but this isn’t original content that needs to be displayed in order for them to grow. For Apple TV+, they have original content such as Ted Lasso, The Morning Show, Schmigadoon!, and Foundation, but they only include original content and this library is small. If they are going to be known for their original content, I feel like they need to create a lot more shows that vary and are up and coming actors rather than A-list celebrities.

    1. I do think that streamers will eventually replace linear TV. Personally, my family cut off our cable years ago since all we have watched is streaming services because we have subscriptions to almost all of them. The only part of linear TV that really succeeds is sports, but eventually that will be moved to streaming fully in my opinion. Yes, streaming services with live TV can cost a good amount, but I think that people that do enjoy streaming services are willing to pay for it.

In my opinion, I think Netflix and HBO Max have the best original series content. Netflix has created critically acclaimed original series’ such as “Orange is The Black” and “Tiger King.” The statistics alone just prove that Netflix has the best original content! According to Variety, “Netflix remains the most frequently cited as offering the best original programming — with 38% of survey respondents picking it as No. 1…” (Spangler). Almost half of the participants that were part of this survey cited Netflix as having the best original content. Clearly, the billions Netflix spends on its original content is paying off. “Squid Game” is one of the most impactful shows that Netflix has ever made. The success of “Squid Game” also shows how great their original content is. According to Yahoo, “The South Korea-produced Squid Game shattered records when it logged 1.65 billion hours of viewing during a 28-day period, more than double the 625 million hours that the made-in-the-U.K. Bridgerton racked up at the beginning of 2021” (“From”). The success of Netflix’s original content is clear from this data. “Bridgerton,” another Netflix original gained over 500 million hours of viewing during a month. Netflix’s most successful show, “Squid Game,” got more than double the amount of viewership. Netflix has secured its place as a household streamer and its original content is definitely a big part of why. People flock to Netflix to watch its big content, a lot of it originally made by Netflix.

I think one streaming service that would benefit from more original content is Apple TV. I could not say a single show that is on Apple TV other than “Ted Lasso.” The reasoning for that- I’m a Media Studies major. “Ted Lasso,” dominated the awards shows and reviews last year. Clearly, Apple TV has the resources and ability to create quality content. Apple has enough money to create a million new shows if they wanted to. I think since Apple can, they should. I think it would also bring more credibility to the service, and really show people Apple is more than phones, and they can do streaming too.

I think streaming will eventually replace traditional TV. Looking at my own Quinnipiac community, very few of my friends actually have cable. Almost all of us treat our televisions as monitors, filled with different streaming apps. People want instant gratification. If a show I want to watch is on Netflix, why would I wait hours to watch a scheduled show on NBC, for example. I think things like sports and news keep people on traditional TVs, but I think eventually they will fizzle out even more. Despite news being one of the things keeping people on linear TV, “..All of the networks are investing in their streaming options, as Fox News added a Carlson show to its Fox Nation subscription streaming service, NBC News is pumping more money into hiring for its channels, including The Choice from MSNBC, and CNN is prepping the launch of CNN+” (Johnson). Networks are starting to pull away from regular TV and divert their attention to streaming. Once this continues to grow, TV will just get more and more obsolete.

There is so many different streaming services options for consumers to choose from. There are many that have been around for years and others that are relatively new. However, it is obvious who the top streaming service is when it comes to offering the best original TV series content. That streaming service is Netflix, the platform has released many great original TV series over many years. Last year, Netflix debuted Squid Games which ended up being their most watched series in history. Along with Squid Game, Netflix has released many fan favorite TV Shows over the years such as Outer Banks and Bridgerton. According to the Yahoo entertainment staff article titled “From 'Squid Game' to 'The Morning Show' here are the winners and losers of 2021 television” they state just that. “Netflix is the worldwide king of streaming” (Alter), the reasoning for this is because Squid Game shattered records and other shows such as Maid, Lupin, and Money Heist became international hits. Netflix has clearly dominated the streaming competition, as according to the article “After Bingeing on Dramas, Netflix and Rivals Target Reality TV,” “Netflix’s original series account for more than half of the reality shows viewers want to watch online” (Shaw).

Of course, Netflix is not the only top streaming service out there when it comes to original TV series content, another popular streaming service in that regard is Disney+. The platform has provided so many popular choses since its arrival to the streaming competition, content such as “The Mandalorian” which is a personal favorite of mine, has taken over consumers attention. Marvel and Star Wars fans have been in for a treat from Disney + as along with “The Mandalorian” they have been given “Loki”, “Wandavision”, “The Book of Boba Fett”, and so much more. With Marvel and Star Wars both having very large followings it is no surprise that Disney + subscriber count has been rapidly growing and will continue to do so. With this rapid growth of subscriber count, they are breathing down Netflix’s necks. In an article titled “Disney+ Has 118.1 Million Subscribers Two Years After Launch” it is stated. “Disney now expects to have 230 to 260 million subscribers worldwide by 2024, and if Disney reaches that goal, Disney+ will have more subscribers than Netflix does today” (Clover). I personally use Disney+ the most out of any streaming platform and I know many others who do the same. Disney+ and especially Netflix will continue to be top of the line streaming platforms for original TV series, but as other platforms continue to improve and with the quick rise of Disney+ it will be interesting to see where Netflix is at in about five years.

    1. I personally believe Peacock should start making more original content, they have “Saved by the Bell” and I personally believe it is underrated, if Peacock can push out more original content even better than that as well as promote themselves correctly, they could be right up there with Disney+ and Netflix.

I do not think streamers will replace linear TV but rather become more popular than it. Linear TV will always be here to stay, especially for older generations. Streaming is the future of content, but it won’t make cable TV completely go away. There is content you can get on cable that you can’t get on streaming, especially for sports. You can stream games but a lot of people, including myself prefer to watch our sports content through regular cable TV and cable sports channels rather through streaming services.

It’s no surprise that the two main streaming services, Netflix and Disney + dominated viewership ratings in 2021, because of their content. Netflix had the first 9 in the top 10 streaming programs of 2021, and that’s just for originals, with Lucifer, Squid Games and The Great British Baking Show being the most popular according to Nielsen ratings (Spangler) Further that, they had the first 12 out of 15 streaming programs that were acquired, with Criminal Minds, Cocomelon and Grey’s Anatomy being the most popular shows, per Nielsen. (Spangler) So when it comes to streaming TV shows, both original and acquired, Netflix is still the top service. Disney + on the other hand is the main streaming service used for movies. 11 out 15 movies in the Nielsen's top 15 streaming movies for 2021 were made from Disney, with Luca, Moana and Raya and the Last Dragon being top 3. (Spangler) Disney has the advantage in movies because they have nostalgia feel to their movies, like Moana and Frozen which were in the top 15, they produce movies every year like Cruella and Jungle Cruise which were published in 2021, and they own Marvel which has one the biggest fanbases in the world, with Black Widow being released in 2021 and Avengers: Endgame being in the top 15. (Spangler) Because of their already major fanbase and subscription rate, Netflix and Disney + will have enough money and exposure to continue making original content for their services, like new seasons of popular shows, Bridgerton and Stranger Things to be released in 2022 on Netflix. (Carey)
Peacock has the potential to be one of the most popular streaming services, being owned by NBCUniversal that already has rights to major sporting events like the NFL, the Summer and Winter Olympics, as well as The English Premier League and even owns WWE content. What Peacock needs to focus on now, is producing and releasing original content to the platform to bring in non-sports fans. Susan Rovner, who helped create hit shows like Watchmen, Gossip Girl, and 2 Broke Girls has become the new Chairman of Entertainment and Content at NBCUniversal TV and streaming. (O’Connell) Rovner has stated that one of her first mandates is to grow content for Peacock, to create “bingeable and urgent shows”, and to bring people to the service. (O’Connell) This could be a great step for Peacock as it’s been lacking original content that people will sign up to see.

Linear TV is decreasing in revenue, per Convergence's “Battle of the American Couch Potato” report, linear TV dropped by 6% and is projected to drop to 10% in 2023. (Balderston) Meanwhile streaming revenue for 2020 came in at $29.6 billion and is projected to double by 2023. (Balderston) Companies are starting to notice this trend, that’s why we are seeing NBCUniversal come out with Peacock, Paramount + coming out with content for CBS and BET etc. Sports, and particularly the NFL, are still bringing in viewers to networks with Super Bowl LV being viewed by just under 93 million viewers. (Schneider) I believe we will see a continued decrease in Linear TV, and increase in streaming service but will live in supplementary roles for years because of the popularity of sports on Network television, but once we see a permanent move to their streaming services from sports, we could see the end in Linear TV for America.

Personally, I think Netflix offers the best original TV series content. Netflix is the biggest streaming platform with over 214 million subscribers. It has been around the longest, and I think they have great originals. They are creating content that the audience enjoys and wants more. Also, they have plenty of original shows that are hits: Ozark, Love Is Blind, You, Bridgerton, Money Heist, Narcos, Squid Game, Outer Banks etc. Most of these shows were very popular on Netflix, and even a couple of these shows helped Netflix gain a lot of subscribers.
Squid Game, Bridgerton, and Money Heist are shows that Netflix made a lot of money from and gained subscribers from. Squid Game is a Korean show series and Money Heist is a Spanish show series. According to Squid Game' Frenzy Lures New Subscribers to Netflix, “Netflix added 4.38 million subscribers from July through September to reach a worldwide total of 213.6 million. Wall Street analysts had projected 3.86 million new customers, according to Refinitiv data” (Al). Squid Game had only cost about 21 million to make, but the profit Netflix made from this show was massive. How Much Money Did Squid Game's Creator Really Make from Netflix? states “the acclaimed Netflix series "Squid Game" has become one of the most successful shows in TV history, with millions upon millions of fans tuning in and even more being collected in revenue by the streaming giant. According to Bloomberg, nearly $900 million in "impact value" was produced by the hit survival drama” (Perez). Money Heist was Netflix’s top popular show at one point, which is crazy because it’s a Spanish show. According to From 'Squid Game' to 'The Morning Show' Here Are the Winners and Losers of 2021 Television “Money Heist (65 million) from Spain crossed borders to become international hit” (Yahoo).
Another streaming service I think has good originals is HBO. HBO has a very popular series out right now, which is Euphoria. It’s trending and talked about all over social media. I think if they keep making originals as good as this show, their platform will grow even more. Also, I think Disney+ is another streaming service that will continue to be one of the top streaming services. They have all the Disney content that’s basically ever came out and gives a feeling of nostalgia that viewers love.
Also, I think streaming will take over television, it already is in a way. People are cutting cable or buying different streaming services. But I think the older generation will always keep television, but the current generation will continue to turn to streaming services.
Overall, I think Disney+ and Netflix will remain in top streaming services for a while. But I do think HBO will be a top streaming service in years to come.

It is obvious that streaming services are in a constant battle to outdo one another with the next best form of entertainment. Despite the numerous platforms to pick from, when it comes to developing the best TV series Netflix and HBO Max stand higher than the rest. Both platforms have done well in creating content that viewers want to binge. Viewers have been loving reality shows or unscripted programming and Netflix has been able to capitalize. Not every tv series is going to be a hit but Netflix has produced multiple binge-able tv series that viewers love. Shows like Love is Blind, and Selling Sunset have created buzz and increased viewership for Netflix. As Netflix dipped their toes into this type of content, ‘the company followed the model of HBO’ (Shaw). HBO Max also is developing a great TV series. Shows like Euphoria have captured so many viewers with Season 1 being released whole, and Season 2 is currently being released weekly on Sunday nights. Season 2 premiered with 13.1 million viewers across HBO Max and HBO. This series is widely talked about on social media platforms where viewers talk about the plot and characters. TV series like this makes HBO Max ‘the second most powerful force in streaming behind Netflix’ (Tassi).

I think Peacock would benefit from creating more original content to expand their content library. Peacock falls behind other streaming services when it comes to creating original content but there is room for growth. People in charge at Peacock and NBCUniversal, like Susan Rovner, know “it's about bingeable, urgent shows and events. I want bigger ideas - more elevated, more premium - to bring people to the service’ (O’Connell). Streaming services know they will do well with the reality content being created by Netflix constantly. The content does well. The executives at NBCUniversal also want to continue linear TV because they do have that network ownership. Rovner was able to bring content like Gossip Girl and 2 Broke Girls to viewers. Peacock has the ability and capability to produce shows that people enjoy if they can capitalize on this unscripted series moment in the streaming services.

I think streaming services will eventually replace linear TV especially as content is constantly switching platforms. A show like Euphoria that is now released every Sunday night at 9:00pm creates so much attention on social media. This past Sunday with the Superbowl also being on, there was a viral picture/meme circulating the internet that pinned two characters, who have had a recent twist in their friendship, against each other. Streaming services can create content that does well with viewers. Netflix, HBO, Peacock and Disney+ all have the money to create the content and TV series people want to see. Linear TV is holding on by sports and not much else. Even sports on linear TV are going down in viewership because of other access platforms to the content which is typical (Porter). Thursday Night Football has been moved to Amazon Prime. With one comes many. Many people watch linear TV for the access to their favorite sports, mostly their NFL team. I think if a streaming service was able to figure out how to broadcast football to viewers where it is accessible to all and all in one place, there is a huge opportunity for sports to move over to streaming services, getting rid of linear TV all together.

There’s almost no question that when it comes to which streaming service has the best original content, Netflix is the one that reigns supreme. First, it’s been around the longest, so naturally it’s had the most time to build up its original content catalog. Netflix in general is also known to release a lot more original content than other streaming services, quantity over quality. That’s not to say there’s no quality content on Netflix, and in fact, when they have a hit, it’s a massive hit.
2021 was a good year for Netflix. Who could forget the hit original show Squid Game, which in a 28 day period, had 1.65 billion hours of viewing. (Staff). That’s a massive data set, but that’s not the only one. At the beginning of 2021, Bridgerton recorded 625 million hours. Other shows like Lupin, Maid, and Money Heist recorded 65-70 million hours of viewing each. Even Tiger King 2, which is considered a failure when compared to its first season, recorded 30 million hours of viewing. (Staff). Given these massive data sets, and that Netflix has over 200 million subscribers, it's a no brainer that Netflix has the best original content.
After Netflix I would say Disney+ has the best original content. They don’t release as much compared to Netflix, they’re more about quality over quantity, which is still effective. To start, their newer original film Encanto was a big hit, especially with the song “We don’t talk about Bruno”, which has 224 million views on YouTube as of February 13th, 2022. Disney+ has also had hit shows like WandaVision and The Mandalorian. Most of Disney+’s successful original content is associated with Marvel or Star Wars, which has allowed them to gain a lot of subscribers at a fast rate. (Silver) Within their first six months of launch, Disney+ gained 54.5 million subscribers. (G.)
I think a streaming service that could do better on its original content is Apple TV+. I think they could rely less on star casting and rely more on storytelling. For instance, Apple TV+ spent a lot of money for major stars like Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston for their show The Morning Show, which at first did bring in a lot of viewers, but even after releasing a second season, lost a lot of buzz and no one really talks about it or any other pricey shows that Apple TV+ released. (Staff). Paramount+ and Peacock could also benefit from creating more original content in general since right now they’re both relying on older, previously made content to bring in subscribers. (Silver).
Though some streaming services could do better with their original content, I do think that streaming services will eventually replace linear, paid-for TV services. First off, in 2021, only 56% of Americans watched TV cable or satellite, and 60% of people not using TV cable or satellite used it at some point. (G.) Between the top four major TV cables (Comcast, Charter, Cox, and Altice) and satellite TV companies DirecTV and DISH, and IPTV TV companies Verizon FiOS and AT&T U-verse, in the U.S., these companies combined only have 85.3 million subscribers. (G.). Way behind Netflix’s over 200 million subscribers, and Disney+ gained more than half that number in its first six months. By the end of 2021, it’s estimated that another 7% of U.S. households will unsubscribe from paid-TV (around 6 million people unsubscribing). (G.). With streaming services quickly gaining subscribers, and linear TV services slowly losing subscribers, it’s only a matter of time till streaming services replace linear TV.

Netflix has had a very successful year with shows such as Squid Games and Bridgeton. Netflix, as of late, produces some of the best original content than any other streaming platform. “Since Netflix “The South Korea-produced Squid Game shattered records when it logged 1.65 billion hours of viewing during 28 days, more than double the 625 million hours that the made-in-the-U.K. Bridgerton racked up at the beginning of 2021(yahoo)”.Netflix's strategy of making original content comes down to a few key things. Knowing your audience and trial and error. For example, the Squid game was pitched to dozens of producers and studios. Netflix taking a chance to create Squid Game was in my opinion the biggest risk they ever took. A lot of Americans like to be able to come home and watch English-speaking television shows. Producing a show in Korean is a big risk because of its complexity. Some Americans don’t like subtitles making it harder to follow the plot in some cases. Money heist, Elite and other shows similar which are produced in Spanish also do very well in the United States. “Netflix has focused heavily on international content in recent years as it seeks to grow its global subscriber numbers''(Clark,). Netflix reaching a global market is smart on their part, making them a global sensation. Americans liking the global contentis a very big win for Netflix as well. One streaming service that needs to improve on its original content is both HBO Max and Apple TV. Their libraries of original content are anything but entertaining. Apple TV gained some notoriety during the pandemic giving them a little push into the streaming wars. HBO Max also launched during the pandemic, focusing more on movie releases than original content. HBO Max did a relieve of the hit classic “Gossip Girl” and “Sex in the city” which were both original content series. Viewers seemed to like it but it hasn’t given HBO Max that push they need to be a key player in the streaming wars. “Despite the bumps in the road, the series is the most successful original content released by HBO Max to date(Francese).” HBO Max has been out for quite some time and is fairly new to the game, but learn a thing or two from Netflix about how to produce beneficial content would be beneficial for their success. Apple TV strategy is slow and steady because Apple is a trillion-dollar company. Even though Apple TV is a trillion-dollar company, they should be trying a little harder to be more competitive with Netflix. The top show was the Morning Show with Jenifer Aniston, which was well produced. Apple TV has a more star-studded cast which helps push their original content. But it’s not the push that’s gonna help them stay competitive in the race. I think that streaming will continue to be a complementary service because people need the news and other cable shows that have been watched for years. Linear TV is essential and is sometimes cheaper than streaming services.

    1. There isn’t much of a surprise that the two main streaming services are Disney+ and Netflix. Both of these services dominated the viewership charts in 2021. The content they were releasing was an instant hit to their viewers causing them to gain lots of viewership. Netflix had the first 9 in the top 10 in 2021, this was strictly because of their Netflix Originals. Some of their best were Squid Games, Lucifer, and Outer Banks. (Spangler) They also have the first 12 out of 15 in, with popular streaming shows like Grey's Anatomy. Once they brought in these types of shows it made the viewership go up, strictly because these shows are requested at such a high demand. Netflix beats Disney+ in the streaming services for shows, however Disney+ has a much better streaming brand for movies. Disney+ has arguably the most watched brand of all time, which is Marvel. Marvel also just released the new Spiderman movie. They also have several other marvel movies as well as Frozen, Moana and Raya.(Spangler) 11 out of the 15 movies for Disney+ are in the top 15 with 2 being in the top 3 as well. With these two streaming services going head to head, it is ultimately what type of show/movie the viewer will end up wanting to watch. Disney+ is more of the family friendly streaming service that still allows for the kids to watch popular movies and shows. Netflix can still be family friendly, but at the sametime some of their shows like Squid Games which was at one point the most streamed show on Netflix is not family friendly. These two streaming services have enough viewership and money to create new shows, Bridgerton and Stranger Things to be released in 2022 on Netflix. (Carey)
I think Peacock has a lot of potential when it comes to streaming services. I was with my friends Sunday night to watch the superbowl, and one of my friends bought Peacock just so we could watch the Superbowl. The overall advertisement for Peacock to do this was very good, and while everyone bought Peacock to watch the Superbowl. They need to find something to release to keep their viewership numbers up before everyone cancels their subscription. Peacock needs to find that bingeable show that gains national attention and turns peacock into something, other than being seen as a sports avenue. (O’Connell) Linear TV is decreasing in revenue, per Convergence's “Battle of the American Couch Potato” report, linear TV dropped by 6% and is projected to drop to 10% in 2023. (Balderston) Linear TV is creating NBCUniversal to create apps such as Paramount and Peacock. I believe that cable tv will slowly go away while these streaming services start to pick up sports shows, and games. Nobody I know at school has cable, everyone just runs streaming services off of the laptops. Cable is slowly going away in this generation, and I think it just comes down to what streaming service will jump on this and really blow up.
